It sucks, for sure. But having seen failed projects that no one will cancel because it would hurt someone's ego, I can say that sometimes cancelling or restarting a project is the right thing to do.

I *like* the polls in the story stream. When it was off to the side, it was random and easily missed. I missed polls never noticed them regularly, even though I like seeing how others respond to polls and their comments. Its smushed down into one line unless you click on it, so its not even a screen real estate issue.

Granted the polls never were extremely interesting in the past and they're certainly boring and pointless now, but I'd like to see them back to the right column, just in case there's one interesting enough someday.

That's a good point, something I hadn't thought about. I'm a daily reader and never made it a habit to look over there so I commonly missed polls, but from the perspective of a non-daily reader having it over there made it more readily accessible.
Based on your comment, its possible that poll participation could drop even in direct story view because it only has daily exposure instead of weekly exposure.

This is exactly true, the participation has tanked since they introduced the polls into the feeds -- see here for the recent poll stats [slashdot.org]. The USB ports one was the last one I distinctly remember being in the sidebar.

It's been an unusual year. I'm a PhD in AI/Data Mining who decided to help out a start-up by doing some Javascript and now I'm doing Java development ... and what I originally intended to accomplish for the year was to do fundamental research in my field from a boat in a nearby canal. Life is nonlinear.
