MC Hammer was among tech entrepreneurs announcing new products at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. The rapper's product is a new search engine called WireDoo. Sadly, it is not an index of things you can't touch, but instead a search engine focusing on relational items. Searching for the word "car" will bring up topics related to a car, like insurance, pricing and safety ratings. WireDoo is still being built and not available to the public yet.

      • That was my second thought when I read this news earlier. My first thought was that, at a glance, it looks like he chose the name "WeirDo". In retrospect at least that's quirky and not just... well... crap.

      Especially since "doo" is slang for shit in English, as in "doo doo" etc. In fact I'm sure I remember a Family Guy episode where Stewie uses doo in that context.

  • Google are loading the search results with service, news, merchandising, amazon, etc, where I'd like to find information. Becoming increasingly annoying as I'm not finding what I want but a lot of junk I don't want to wade through.

    I think Hammer's a little slow on the uptake if he hasn't seen this trend.

    Another opportunity for Microsoft to sit on their hands, like they did with Yahoo? Do nothing and watch Google throttle themselves and drive users away with crappy search results.

  • Cheers to MC Hammer for taking initiative to become involved in creating what is at least an attempt at bringing more usefulness to the web. It is very easy to read about this project, roll your eyes and declare it a dud. It may well be the case that the technology will be useless and die a quick death. But let's hold on until it's public. It may very well be useful enough to be bought out by google (then killed 6 months later of course). Personally I view this technology as something that might prove
  • So the naughty stuff under parental blocks will be under "U can't touch this", the adult stuff will be "Yo sweetness!", and a special category for politics "Help the children".

  • duckduckgo.com does these things for you and protects your privacy. Besides, if you searched for "car" on any search engine, you'd get ads for things like insurance, so the engine will give you related items and the engine makes a profit off of it.

    That being said, I guess we are knocking it prematurely. We gotta see it before we know it's crap.

    • If they want people to use it, perhaps they shouldn't have chosen such a stupid name as "Duck Duck Go." The same sentiment applies to WireDoo. And Bing. And Yahoo, HotBot, Excite, and just about every other search engine I remember. Hmm. Odd isn't it? Even Google sounds silly.

      (except Lycos and AltaVista, which actually didn't have a lame name)

      • I've always thought "yahoo" was the absolute stupidest name ever for a search engine or anything else. where i'm from, a yahoo is an idiot...

        what kills me is when you see an ad for something like "nanodyne.com" but the contact email address is "nanodyne@yahoo.com" !?!?

  • Google already has a feature that does this. Search for anything, click on "More Search Tools" (If not already displayed) and then click on "Related Searches" (two below "All Results").

      He went ~13 million (!!!) into debt, declared bankruptcy, eventually spent most of what he'd earned. He then made large changes in his life, and became a minister. Not my chosen profession, but I think it's still pretty interesting.

    • Maybe he's just the front for a startup hoping to get some angel investors on board. Actually, the kind of celebrity who already snorted all their money (and I'm not saying he is that kind of celebrity) is the perfect public face for that kind of setup (the celeb gets some much needed cash, the startup gets some money and the investors get to hang out with a washed up singer/actor who reminds them of their college days).

  • I can see this being useful as add-on to a more comprehensive search engine in the long run. Or perhaps integrated more tightly into a mobile offering somehow.

    Since the article states that this search engine isn't meant as a âoecompetitive attempt to recreate searchâ, he likely is positioning this to be bought by a big company.

    Notice what he said at the end of the presentation.

  • I, for one, am happy for Mr. Hammer's entrepreneurial pursuit.

    I wish other rappers could follow suit.

    Eminiem, for example, could build a search engine based on white-listed entries.

    Tupac could group similar sites into gangs- perhaps have a specialised search engine that shoots results out for law enforcement officials.

    So Google goes out of its way to try to filter out all the crap you don't want to see (not counting Google's ads, but they try to axe sites trying to rig things to redirect your search), and WireDoo goes out of its way to add even more crap that you don't want to see? That sounds extremely unappealing. What do you type if you JUST

  • More power to him to use his money for a positive investment. While I'm a great fan of outright philanthropy, I think that investment in startups and/or local businesses is a great thing for those in the entertainment industry to get into. Especially with how most rappers invest most their money into their "crib", jewelery, guns, and perhaps the "gold plated item" industries, or at best creating their own line of "urban" attire, music labels that often propagate stereotypes and either embody or are invol

      You're aware that MC Hammer was bankrupt about 10 years ago and is a pastor for a church now, right? Or at least he was, until he started doing the "celebrity reality" tv circuit. Maybe he has money again?

      • I am and that makes my point even more valid. He spent his first big break's millions on the kind of stuff typical to entertainers, especially rappers for the need of street cred, wasn't smart with his money and ended up with very little. He found a way to make himself relevant again and pay his bills, so this time he's using surplus funds not just to buy something expensive for the hell of it or impress MTV, but to invest in something that will hopefully not just pay off for him, but provide a useful web
