Ubuntu Satanic Edition Banned From Distrowatch 24

skeeto writes "The infamous Ubuntu Satanic Edition has been banned from Distrowatch by the site's maintainer, Ladislav Bodnar, who said, 'There is no way I am going to add this distro to DistroWatch. [...] I don't consider the name "Satanic edition" as an appropriate name for a Linux distribution.' But the main reason seems to be that 'Ubuntu is a registered trademark of Canonical. You need to show me an official permission from Canonical that grants you the use of the word Ubuntu in your product's name.' What about Muslim and Christian editions? It seems that worries about trademark infringement and offensive material does not stop Distrowatch from including those."

    can you say "censorship"? I get the feeling that the distrowatch dude is a religious republican who is against fairness and other religious practices. I have to say that it's stupid that Satanic Edition is not ok (even if I am not a satanist) but yet the muslim and christian editions are. What hypocrisy!

      You have got to be kidding me. "religious republican"? Where in the world did politics come into this... religious? maybe.. republican? laf..

      You = hypocrite

      At every turn you have liberals bashing conservatives (and vise versa). Grow up.

    • Believe it or not, the developer of Ubuntu Christian Edition has an official permission from Canonical to use the word Ubuntu in the name of their product. I have a copy of the email granting the permission.
    • He's not saying one is better than the other, but he doesn't want to see the distro fragment along these lines.

      What if someone wanted to make a Republican edition? Of course, if that happens you'll be almost guaranteed to see a Democrat edition, followed by a green party edition etc. He doesn't deem this a valid distro (and its a lame idea to begin with), so he's putting a stop to this bad idea.

  • Isn't it obvious Satan created this issue so there could be a controversy while he sits back and laughs on his iron hot-red metal seat with pins sticking up all over the place?

    • Is it weird that that seat makes me think sexy thoughts?
    • You know, Satan is actually pretty fucking [wikipedia.org] cold [wikipedia.org].

      Dante and Virgil, with no one to talk to, quickly move on to the center of hell. Condemned to the very center of hell for committing the ultimate sin (treachery against God) is Satan, who has three faces, one red, one black, and one a pale yellow, each having a mouth that chews on a prominent traitor. Satan himself is represented as a giant, terrifying beast, weeping tears from his six eyes, which mix with the traitors' blood sickeningly. He is waist deep in i

  • Look, the Satanic edition has nothing to do with Satan or real Satanism. It's just skinned with a metalhead Bevis and Butthead style satanism theme. And the guy that runs Distrowatch is perfectly free and within his rights to not add a distro that he doesn't feel like adding, quit your bitching.
  • it's not much of a distro. Only a new skin. Christian edition, even though I don't agree with it, does include different packages with their release. That's why I wouldn't put it in, it's just a theme.

    • Just curious, Why do he/she/they care if its listed on distrowatch? If you want a distribution orientated toward specific beliefs, and its done in a manner that is appealing, then this should be a non-issue. Of course, if it really is just a skin, all they are doing is creating a headache for themselves. But that is their choice as presented under the gpl. Don't like the decision of a admin, find a alternative. The internet isn't bound by normal physical laws, normally that is. You can do pretty much what
