Catholic Group Issues Prayer For Faithful To Say Before Sex 27

The London-based Catholic Truth Society has published a book with a special prayer for pious couples to recite together before they have sex. The Truth Society says the prayer aims to 'purifying their intentions' so that the act is not about selfishness or hedonism. The book also covers other stages of marriage and family life including, pregnancy, caring for children and elderly parents, and a short prayer to recite when you've stayed out too late on poker night.

If you pray it, they will come?
  • Catholics have always believed that sex between a married hetrosexual couple was a holy, good act. I think many of you are thinking of the puritans disdain for sex, which permeates the social mores of American life.

That is a bogus statement. The Puritans (in America) also believed sex between a married couple was sacred. In fact, there is a record during colonial times of a man being fined for not having sex enough with his wife!

    • Not a true statement. Yes, disdain for extramarital sex. Disdain for sex in marriage? Not at all. They believed it was a gift from God and sacred and meant only for marriage. Which is likely why you don't hear too much about it. They didn't talk about it too much publically. Why should they? They didn't publically write about their finances much, either. Maybe they didn't think it was particularly the business of the public?

Yes, as long as the couple's intentions are correct. They must have goals of unity (of their love) and procreation in mind. See the catechism: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/p3s2c2a6.htm#2360 [scborromeo.org]

2363 The spouses' union achieves the twofold end of marriage: the good of the spouses themselves and the transmission of life. These two meanings or values of marriage cannot be separated without altering the couple's spiritual life and compromising the goods of marriage and the future of the family.

The conjugal love of man and woman thus stands under the twofold obligation of fidelity and fecundity.

A sex act, even between married heterosexual couples is not necessarily a good holy act, unless by doing so they are expressing love and intending to have children. If they have in mind sex for pleasure's sake (hedonism) or their own desires, rather than love (selfishness), the act is NOT good, as the summary imp

      • Having been raised Catholic, I can safely say that the last group of people to trust on matters relating to sex is a group of men who purposely (try to) avoid it. It's like getting advice about conversational English from someone who has never spoken a word of it [wikipedia.org].
      • Everything you said is true, but not new. Maybe its news worthy to people who don't know about it. Much like how you could pick a random wikipedia page and make it your headline.
  • "Intercourse is a selfless act"

So that's what the church is teaching? And does anybody believe it? Correction - do any dudes believe it? A statement like "intercourse is a selfless act" is a little fishy to me. How might that statement be used?

Girl: I'm not sure if I should. Do you really love me?
Boy: Oh baby, SURE I love you. Intercourse is a SELFLESS ACT!
    Girl: Okay...

Don't laugh at this pamphlet too hard. The Catholic Church is apparently flying wingman here.
  • Most common version: "Oh, God, please let her be on the pill. Amen."
    • I know that prayer.
The second most common version: "Oh, God, please don't let her have the clap. Amen."

TFA is about prayers before sex, not after.

Personally I always liked "Please, don't let this be a cop, Amen".
    • To which the reply is "No, she's catholic and indoctrinated enough to do a silly prayer of her own"

Her #1 prayer is "please let foreplay go on for more than 10 minutes. I want at least 12 minutes of sexy time."

.... Welll, sometimes it might be "Oh, God!", but I get the feeling, at times like that, that that's prayer enough, for times like that. Anyway, suffice it to say that all I can say to that article is, you go, Indiana Joe!
