Disney World Plans a Tron-Themed Rollercoaster: 'Lightcycle Run' (cinemablend.com) 31

Released 40 years ago, the 1982 movie Tron eventually spawned a 2010 sequel (plus a 19-episode animated series that aired on Disney XD between 2012 and 2013). But it also spawned a rollercoaster...

Tron Lightcycle Run first opened at Shanghai Disneyland in 2016. (You can find some ride-through footage on YouTube. Apparently riders race against a yellow lightcycle....)

And now the ride is finally coming to Florida, reports Cinemablend: Tron Lightcycle Run began its construction back in 2018 and while the E-ticket ride was massive, we expected things to move along as quickly as possible. However, then a little pandemic happened and that changed a lot. Construction was delayed and even after the parks reopened things were going quite slowly, but more recently things have picked up, and now we know when the ride will finally be open.

At the D23 Expo today Disney Parks Chairman Josh D'Amaro announced a Spring 2023 opening date for Tron Lightcycle Run..... Lightcycle Run has been undergoing testing with live riders of late, a video was shown during the presentation of Josh D'Amaro himself doing a run...

CNET quotes D'Amaro as saying the ride is "really close to being ready for showtime."

Just wanted to say how underrated Tron: Legacy was IMHO. The original Tron premise was kind of silly, so that was a handicap, but I think they made close to the best possible sequel possible based on that. Especially the visuals and the soundtrack were amazing. Oh, yeah, the soundtrack itself was severely underrated, for me it was the best that year.

Sorry I have no mod points, but at least I can agree with you.

The soundtrack was amazing, I find it's great environmental with just a bit of spoken word, prefect for coding. I still listen to it (Ton Legacy Complete is best version I think) fairly often.

There has been renewed rumblings of a sequel, I really hope it happens... as you said the sequel they made is probably around the best you could get for a sequel from the original.

      • There has been renewed rumblings of a sequel,

I thought you were far behind the times because I distinctly remember reading any hope of a third movie was dead [variety.com].

However, apparently there is consideration [looper.com] of a third Tron movie [distractify.com]. There is even a placeholder IMDB page [imdb.com].

        Time will tell.

        • Yeah I'm not sure it is enough of a possibility to warrant an IMDB placeholder yet, but they are at least considering it. Nothing about it at D23 this year though so It's a good while off yet if ever.

In fact maybe a new Tron is in better shape having not been announced yet, than Star Wars movie projects that have been announced before but now seem to be dead. :-)

    • There’s a 4k open matte copy in a torrent. About 68gb.

I dunno, after letting some decades pass from when I saw saw the original, it strikes me that there's two stories running at the same time in Tron -- maybe 3.

      1. A small shop became a Large Corporation, and pushed out the people that made it happen

      2. Those same people doing the pushing-out taking credit for others' work (why MCP, when destroyed, was actually one of the greybeards)

And a debatable 3rd -- the vaguely religious way the Programs believed in Users.

But it was all obscured by flashy (for the time) special effects

And imo.. Bit stole that show. "Yes." "No." "no no NO NO NO!"

How can a character with just two words of dialog inject that much emotion into his lines?

David Warner as Sark also turned in a commendable performance, only topped by his portrayal of a similar security drone in Titanic -- Lovejoy.

    • *spoilers*

I did not like Tron: Legacy. I was a child when I saw the original, and the effects really set it apart from anything that had been done before, so it was easy for such a movie to capture a child's imagination, even if it was silly with a weak plot.

Be that as it may, I thought Tron: Legacy did a disservice to the cannon established by the original, given all the things they changed about it (bleeding in the digital world, street clothes instead of light-armor when digitized, non-90 degree turns,

Absolutely disagree on most of the things you've said.

The only point of agreement is that the soundtrack was good. I would suggest that Olivia Wilde was a breath of fresh air. But the soundtrack was hyped *heavily* and not even close to "underrated".

The premise was a science-fiction premise; you might as well shoot down Star Wars hyperspace and Star Trek warp speed while you're at it.

The visuals' design were under-impressive. Instead of the circuit-like patterns (in a day when the circuitry of a computer was more relevant to a program), there's a couple of abstract lines and circles near the shoulders. The programs had visible ZIPPERS in their clothing. The discs weren't solid shapes anymore that could be used to deflect incoming discs, but handheld rings.

And the set design based on the plot was a kick in the fans' faces too. "Oh wow they hired scientists who said you'd need tanks of chemicals in Flynn's office to store the chemicals that re-make his body" but the programs were going to bust out of the computer and take over the physical world? Well they'd have to start by abducting homeless people and kids for the raw materials to generate each program's body. And what do they do when the basis of all their weapons and vehicles would no longer work in the physical world but the cops still have guns?

And "let's say we're gifting the new OS to the world, it's 'open source'". When the stolen/leaked code would still have licensing terms all over it and Sam Flynn is very obviously headed the f___ to jail. Thank you for misunderstanding what "open source" means, you Disneytards.

At least on the basis of the original science-fantasy elements, the plot in "TRON 2.0" which Disney of course abandoned and f___ed over in a heartbeat made perfect sense. You can't take over the physical world from inside, but you could utterly co-opt and smash the banking system. And eventually education, voting, culture, political secrets, communications.

As was said by other reviewers, Kosinski had absolutely no balls when in 2010, he could've used tablet computers, satellites, networks, virtual machines, headsets... but no, he went for the castrated "digital Galapagos Islands" garbage, didn't he?

"TRON 2.0" was 2003 and IT had the original Encom mainframe in a small pocket system, PDAs, networks...

"TRON: Legacy" was the ball-less, over-hyped, under-delivering garbage piece of faeces reboot instead of "TRON 2.0". Just like "Doctor Who" 2006+ instead of the pre-2005 novels, "Star Trek" since Abrams instead of expanding like the books did, "Star Wars" since Abrams instead of the EU Disney threw out, David Goyer's "Foundation" instead of the Asimov-estate-licensed other authors' work, Amazon's craptacular "The Rings Of Power" well enough said there.

And it's *terrifying* to think that people think "Legacy" was *UNDER*-rated. On a nerd/geek website. Yeah. Downvote me like the unpopular opinions even with evidence get. I don't care anymore. If this is what Slashdot is now, who cares.

In episode 2F09 when Itchy plays Scratchy’s skeleton like a xylophone, he strikes the same rib twice in succession, yet he produces two clearly different tones. I mean, what are we to believe, that this is some sort of a magic xylophone or something? Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

I have to agree with Ecuador, it wasn't terrible. Just mediocre, apart from the soundtrack.

TRON Legacy was frustrating because it was so close to being good. As you say, there were a lot of issues that combined to ruin it, but I feel like there are still lots of interesting stories to explore in that world.

TRON Uprising was actually not bad. The animation wasn't great but towards the end it was building to something, then it got cancelled.

A miniseries or another movie would be very welcome here, if they cou

    • The original Tron was amazing from a technical standpoint, and the visuals were not all done by CGI rendering. Think big film sheets and the like. And you needed the patience of a monk and a saint for the frames that were CGI rendered.

So the quirks of the original can be forgiven because it really was something that wasn't done before nor did they have any previous works that they could reference.

      • I'm much more a fan of the Original Tron than Tron: Legacy, but I'm glad that they're basing the roller coaster on the Tron: Legacy light cycles. Having the roller coaster performing 60 MPH 90 degree turns would snap necks, and not be enjoyable for the public.
        • "When I was your age, these light cycles turned at 90-degree angles!! AND WE LIKED IT!!"

        • If this roller coaster is going through what I imagine is a long fabric tunnel with rear projectors along the way, they can project the 90 degree turns and have the carriages themselves jolt to simulate that turn.

It would be real enough to the riders who don't have a clue what a real 90 degree turn would be like on the human body.

    • Tron 1 made sense to me. It was weird, it had a kind of mythical feel to it, but it made sense to me. The characters, and the world -- I love them. Somewhere in my imagination, I have been living in that world.

Tron 2 didn't make sense to me. Tron's sudden "remembering" felt deeply impersonal and disconnected to me. Instead, it felt merely: convenient. Convenient for the plot. And can someone tell me what the message of the show is? Because it's either (A) that we shouldn't attempt to do big things,

I thought the animated show was pretty great, too, plot and story-wise. I was sad it wasn't continued; it had a lot of potential.

  • The headline seems off, since as even the summary notes they are running test cars through it already.

Pretty for from "planning", it's built and seems to already be working! They may have sone internal work that is not yet done but basically it's there.

    • Yeah, a better headline would read "Disney World's Tron-Themed Rollercoaster May Soon Open", or something like that.

Anyhow, I watched the video of the ride in Shanghai, and was pretty disappointed in the lack of 90 degree instant turns. Well, okay, kidding aside, it looked pretty fun. Seems like a more modern version of Space Mountain, maybe? That was one of my favorites growing up. Have always been a sucker for those E-ticket Disney rides.

  • already where they have to put out some work or somebody stars questioning Disney's ownership of "TRON", is it?

  • Lol, if the roller-coaster ride is going to come close to emulating that, I'd give it a pass! :)

  • A Top Gun Rollercoster would be great!
  • Great, now you're gonna see me at Disney 24/7 while I waste every cent I have. Now if only I could make my own Tron costume, like Jay Maynard. That'd be nice. Then, I can de-rezz my enemies with an identity disc (it'll just be a frisbee, though.)
  • I liked all 3. The original, uprising, and legacy. The original I saw as a kid, and it was a blast. Going to the arcade and playing that stylish cabinet was fun too. Sure it was campy, but that's just how movies were made at the time. It brought me into a new world, and I contribute it to sparking my interest in electronics and computers.

Legacy was more or less something made for its time too. Campy movies just aren't a thing anymore. Still though it was good in the way it explained what happened to t

    • Couple things: there was a 2-book comic book series released alongside Tron: Legacy called Tron: Betrayal, intended as to bridge the gap between the two movies. I thought it did a better job than Legacy did of making the characters fit into the story. Legacy just didn't have enough time to cover everything that it needed to cover.

There was also a game released in 2003, called Tron 2.0, well before a sequel movie was in the works. The game functions as a sequel to the original movie, taking it in an entir
  • Is this going to be the park's first *actual* coaster, or is it going to be yet another of those silly Space-Mountain-inspired theme rides where a cart on tracks tamely drives you from room to room so you can watch the animatronics? Because where I come from, we don't count those as roller coasters.
  • To be honest, I always thought that real psychics didn't exist. But my friend advised me to talk to a psychic online and he told almost everything about me, I was pleasantly surprised. In any case, in order to help a person and tell him something, you need to have good psychic abilities, so I think you should try email psychic readings [kasamba.com], it is just as effective as personal communication.
