Why is Slashdot converting a JPEG to a PNG?
Not only is it not the right format for the job (this is clearly a photographic image, not line-art), it increases the file size for no reason.
At the very least, give us a link to the source image.

  PNG has more graphic options than jpeg. Alpha channel for example. Probably whatever they are using converts everything to png for standardized processing
