Australians To Get New Sex Party 4

No, not that kind of sex party, a political party. The Australian Sex Party will be launched in Melbourne on Thursday as an alternative to moral campaigners and prudish politicians. Fiona Patten, who is head of the national adult retail and entertainment lobby group the Eros Association, said the trigger had been the government's decision to place a mandatory filter on the Internet. "This filter actually blacklists any adult site so it means that material which is absolutely legal for an adult to buy in a newsagency in Australia, they will be prohibited from viewing it online," Patten said. I'm not sure how effective they will be, but I'm sure they'll have the best conventions ever.

This seems like a great place to start! On a more serious note, anyone else find it funny that despite the name, the Liberal party is conservative? The Australian voters are fucked eight ways from Sunday by conservative parties all around. I want to sue the Liberals for false advertising, since every policy of theirs as long as I've been alive has seemed pretty conservative; even right-wing in some cases.

It's mildly amusing I guess, but basically just an accident of history. They've never made any secret of their "conservative"/"right-wing" nature.

I find it even more amusing that the two major US political parties have names that are essentially synonyms of each other (Democrats vs Republicans), and that the two parties appear to have completely swapped positions and supporter-demographics since the US Civil War.

Technically, the Liberal party has social conservatives and social liberals - their conservatism is mostly economic. It's just that Howard ran the party on his own terms. I expect that Turnbull may turn it into something more reasonable. Also, take note that Rudd is every bit as conservative as Howard, he just has a different constituency.
