Tesla Tequila Sells Out Within Hours, Triggers Bidding Wars on eBay (electrek.co) 72

Thursday Tesla's web site began selling $250 bottles of Tesla-branded tequila, describing it as a "small-batch premium 100% de agave tequila anejo made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves."

Electrek explores the frenzy that followed: The product sold out in hours after it appears on Tesla's website and even before Elon Musk could tweet a link to the Tesla Tequila to his close to 40 million followers... Electrek's own article about the launch of Tesla Tequila was read by over half a million people within a day of posting about it.

The product is not even in the hands of consumers just yet, but some people who placed reservations for it are trying to resell them already. Based on some listings on eBay, people are asking between $400 to $1,500 for a bottle of Tesla Tequilla. Some are even selling empty bottles and still asking for up to $1,000....

We don't even know if the tequila is any good.

This is purely selling on the strength of Tesla's brand.

  • For some reason, I was picturing that they were taking pre-orders for a new sub-compact, like Mini-Cooper or Smart Cart sized, called the "Tequila".

    • I'd love it if they made something that looked exactly like the Honda e sport concept.

Because Honda won't, and even if they did, they won't sell it in the US... they seem to have lost their "fun, but niche" mojo.

    • Here's an investor alert: Company subcontracts the production of a limited run item, customers go mental. If this isn't a sign of a good company I don't know what is. Telsa is displaying an incredible amount of brand power here.

      • by edis ( 266347 )

When raw value of an item is pretty much that of a bottle of tequila in your nearest shop, all the rage speaks about madness, and its amplifying. Alright, stakes on the speculation, addressing potential of that target madness. It is not about good company, since this product is not even its product, or related to the company's mission, activities, talents. It depicts black hole in the communal brain.

        • You don't need to be successful in your primary mission to be a good company to invest in. Again let me repeat: this is an incredibly amount of brand power. In many cases brand is one of the most valuable things a company has. A company can get away with a *lot* of shit if the brand is liked.

          • by edis ( 266347 )

This is more short-term side-catch, than the power of the company, as such. I get, it might go fine to the collectors of limited bottles, but then you can come with a bottle of limited series every month, which will gradually dissolve itself, apart from rare collect-them-all fans. Power of the company is not in by-products, determined or best-illustrated by these.

        • With very few behind-the-locked-glass examples at your liquor store, a really really good añejo or extra añejo should only set you back $60 - $99 for 750ml. Casa Noble is one of my favorite labels for a good smooth añejo and I can get that for just under $60. If you spent $250 on a bottle, it could just be full of Margaritaville Gold ($12) and you would never know; because you probably would never crack the seal of your collector item.

    • Just because a handful of tech bros can't manage to extricate their mouths from Musk's tusk doesn't mean they've got any longevity whatsoever. Lots of companies that fail to live up to their narcissistic dictator's assertions of excellence have a rabid following for quite some time. Many people insisted that whats-his-name behind WeWork was the business messiah right up until the company completely imploded. Despite having significant revenue, their business model was completely unsustainable. Same thing wi

If you don't like Elon/Tesla and don't want to invest, then just don't. But if you think shorting Tesla stock is the way to riches, the joke will be on you.

  • Musk could make a fortune on that. If you smoke his weed, you get crazy and successful ideas about building electric cars and reusable space rockets.

"Even worse than Apple or Linux fanboys."

Why? This Tequila bottle will go very nicely with my Tesla Flamethrower and in 50 years will sell for a fantastillion on Antique's Roadshow.

      • Made-to-be collectables are yawn inducing.

Real rarities, like a 1922 plain US cent, are rare because of historical circumstances.

So sorry. Your Franklin Mint silver rounds do have a melt value, though.

    • When has a limited edition alcohol run not caused this to happen? This isn't Tesla fanbois, it's collectors.

  • The thing the article writer does not understand is that there's a huge number of people that collect Tequila bottles, a lot of them are pretty ornate. The Tesla bottle seems to fit well into that collectable category as it's pretty fancy itself...

So it's not surprising that they could go for a lot, especially combined with the limited numbers and branding.

"We don't even know if the tequila is any good." is very much besides the point...

I'm just impressed by the shape of that blown glass (I've never worked glass myself but a family friend does, and that looks really difficult, esp. given that they had to be produced in bulk)

I know someone who's already gotten a chance to try it and said it was quite good. But I expect most people will just use it as decor. Also, a lot of Tesla investors are also talking about getting one and saving it for various milestones, like S&P inclusion, various share price or production milestones, etc.

  • Musk will hopefully inspire a new generation of CEOs, people who actually know what they are talking about, rather than Wall Street sycophants.
Delivering repeatedly on technically challenging projects makes him super credible, so if he is willing to put his name on a Tequila, there will be lots of buyers.

    • Ba-dum *TISS*

You seriously believe that, do you?

Given that I've previously been trigger-downmodded on this, I presume you truly honestly believe he himself puts the wrench on the bolt, the line in the CAD and parameters in the formula of the magical AI space cars "he invented"...

      • by Rei ( 128717 )

Ironic you should mention this, given that he's famously unusual among CEOs for doing exactly that, insisting on working every line job at least once in order to get a sense of what can be improved. And his main work at SpaceX these days is Raptor engine engineering.

But no, in general, that's not a leader's job. A leader's primary job is overarching strategic decisions. And the success of a leader is based on how successful their companies are, not how many bolts they personally put on.

    • Part of Musk's brand is aspirational, and completely unconnected with the fundamentals of his business. It is a bit like Connor MacGregor and a certain impeached disgrace, and I bet there is a yuuuuge overlap in fanbois.

This is why Tesla is trading at a 1000:1 PE (or was when last I checked). People see the Musk success stories and want to participate. If they can't afford one of the cars, they buy the stock. If they can't afford the stock, maybe they can afford the tequila. There is a primitave totemic el

  • Excellent book about Elon Musk: Elon Musk: A Mission to Save the World [amazon.com].

Elon Musk is excellent at being logical. There are areas in which he is not logical:

    1) He is not sufficiently logical about women. He has been divorced 3 times. Inside the turbulent personal life of Elon Musk, who's dated Hollywood stars, has triplets and twins, and just had a baby with musician Grimes [businessinsider.com].

    2) Elon Musk often does public things that he does not explain well. Two examples:

Go on I dare to logical explain a woman's action thru-out a entire day. 2) Elon explain well, the usual problem is the people listening do not have enough techincal backgroud to understand what he is saying. 3) I check Ebay, there are empty bottles selling for hundreds of dollars, there are none selling for thousands of dollars.

Let's hope this product does a little better on the market than Trump Vodka did. The one clear difference in this brand is if you get wasted you can now ask your Fully Self Driving Car to take you home. Just make sure you buy the car first. Now that is marketing for you!

  • Last I look you could not sell alochol on ebay, Wonder how the listings are allowed.

  • Also includes Elon spunk.
  • As a Tesla owner and enthusiast, I found out that this went on sale quickly enough so I could have still ordered a bottle or two. I just couldn't justify that $250 price though, especially as someone who isn't a big tequila fan to begin with.

But the grave mistake I made was in not seeing this as the collectible it really was. So far, every single time Elon Musk has sold some limited time product (like the Boring Company "blowtorch"), it's gone way up in value within hours of it selling out.

  • > "This is purely selling on the strength of Tesla's brand."

This is purely selling in the strength of a whole lot of stupid people. Fixed that for you.

  • One thing I've notice that been steadily rising the past decade, and really has taken off this year, is people, usually using bots, to buy up any sort of limited quantity product that they think there will be a resale market for, and then turn around to sell it on eBay, etc a huge markup.

New Game Consoles, Concert Tickets, New release Video Cards, pretty much anything they imagine has a profit potential. And it's not just consumer goods, I saw a lot of attempted rent seeking/arbitrage in local real estate
